King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality executive mayor, Nyaniso Nelani, on October 6 officially handed over 209 housing units to elated beneficiaries of Wards 4 and 30 of the local municipality.
The housing units signalled the completion of housing projects that had been stalled for years, but were resuscitated by the provincial Department of Human Settlements in 2021 when it unblocked six housing projects under the local municipality.
Mthatha Express previously reported on the handing over of houses to 12 beneficiaries of the New Payne Housing Project, which is but one of the projects that have been resuscitated by the provincial government.
The New Payne Housing Project was supposed to have been completed as far back as 2013, but experienced delays for over a decade owing to a myriad of challenges, including registration with National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC).
“The successful completion of these housing units is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the provincial government, local housing authorities, developers, and community partners.”
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all those involved in these projects, including contractors, architects, and community organisations, for their unwavering dedication and hard work,” said KSD mayoral spokesperson, Olwethu Mabovula.
Mabovula added that 164 housing units were built and handed over to beneficiaries during the previous financial year.
“These new housing units are thoughtfully designed to meet the diverse needs of our residents, offering a range of affordable and accessible options. Each unit is built modernly and boasts a welcoming environment that fosters a sense of community,” she added.
She added that the municipality would continue to explore innovative partnerships and funding sources, to ensure that every resident has access to a safe and affordable place to call home.
“We encourage residents who are interested in these new housing units to visit our human settlement department at Munitata building. Our dedicated team is available to assist with the application process and answer to any questions,” Mabovula concluded.
Meanwhile, KSD Portfolio Head for Human Settlements, Councillor Nombulelo Sibeko, handed over an appointed contractor to build 27 housing units at Luxeni Village under Ward 10 of the local municipality on October 12.
The municipality said the project was aimed at providing shelter, restoring dignity and improving the quality of life of its destitute citizens.
