Two people have lost their lives while four sustained severe
injuries after two vehicles collided head on the N2 road in
Idutywa on Saturday.

Spokesperson for Department of
Transport, Unathi Binqose, said the incident happened on the N2 in Idutywa in the direction of Mthatha where the two vehicles collided head on.

“The vehicles were
travelling from opposite directions. An Isuzu bakkie with allegedly one occupant was travelling from Mthatha and a Toyota RAV4, with allegedly five occupants, was travelling from Idutywa when the accident happened,” said Binqose.

Two men – the driver and a passenger from the RAV4 – died on impact, while four other people, including the driver of the Isuzu bakkie sustained severe injuries.

Binqose confirmed that the injured were taken to
Butterworth Hospital.

According to him the use of alcohol was cited as the main
contributing factor for the accident, as observed on the scene by witnesses.

“A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Idutywa Police for further investigation.”
