Amathole Women’s Network recently embarked in the Operation Sikhona initiative, focusing on drugs, roadblocks, and non-compliance of liquor.

“While police were busy with their patrols, they also conducted stop and search and drugs were recovered. Three suspects aged between 20 and 30 were arrested for possession of drugs,” said police spokesperson Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

She added that with the assistance of detectives five more suspects were arrested for contravention of protection orders.

“Four shebeens were closed and liquor was confiscated by the police. As part of crime prevention strategy police stopped and searched the people in the CBD and dangerous weapons were also confiscated. Roadblocks were also conducted on the N2 and traffic fines to the value of R4 200 were issued.”

The Amathole Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu commended the initiative.

“These operations assist in crime prevention. Such initiatives should continue to ensure safety in the community through high visibility and blue lamp patrols,” said Xakavu.
