An artist from Qokolweni location in Mthatha is passing his knowledge of art on to the next generation by training learners who are interested in visual art.
Nangamso Mgwetyana said that among the things that he is doing, are painting and portraits.
He said he was educating young people with the aim of ploughing back into the community.
“I always encourage people that if you have a talent, you must not sit down but instead try to get advice from others who have already developed their skills.
“I started what I am doing when I was in high school. That’s when I saw that I should pursue my talent,” said Mgwetyana.
He said some of the learners were brought by their parents so that he could teach them. Mgwetyana confirmed that he was also mentored by an artist, when he was younger.
He was previously part of a programme called Artists in School (AIS) that was hosted by the Guild Theatre and the Department of Education from 2015-2018.
“I was based at Tsolo High, teaching Grade 8 and 9 in visual arts. The programme had to be stopped due to COVID-19 regulations.”
