Yanga Malusi (23), from Gwadana Village in Dutywa, is feeling highly motivated after he joined a new athletics club, which is based in East London, and also won a 10km race during the Mnquma Local Municipality Mayor’s Cup event last month.

The talented young athlete, Malusi, who previously ran for Zwelonke Athletic Club from the Mbhashe area, joined Boxer Athletic Club a month ago, with the aim of taking his career to the next level.

In his first race representing his new club, on June 26, the young athlete once again showed athletes around Mnquma and Mbhashe that he was still the best when it comes to the 10km running distance.

The unstoppable athlete took first position when he outpaced more than 30 athletes who were part of the 10km race, which started from Msobomvu Sports Ground, turned near the police station in Mchubakazi township, and finished where it commenced.

After an impressive performance by the Boxer Athletic Club athlete, the Mnquma Local Municipality Mayor, Sithembiso Ncetezo, presented a trophy, gold medal, water bottle and towel to the winner, as first prize.

Malusi was happy to receive the prizes and he also appreciated the opportunity he had been given to run in the Mnquma Mayor’s Cup.

Ever since the 23-year-old first started to compete in local races or marathons that had been organised in Mnquma and Mbhashe from 2015 to 2021, he has never lost a single race, winning every event he entered.

Now that he has joined the East London-based club, his mission is to compete against the top 10km runner in the province, Melikhaya France, who competes for Ikamva Athletic Club from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

Malusi has always taken second position whenever he has competed in 10km races against France, but after having joined a new team with good training resources, his mission is to become the top provincial runner over the 10km distance.
