The South Africa Amateur Boxing Federation, in Mnquma, will host a boxing event at the Zovuyo Hotel in Ndabakazi Village, near Butterworth town this Saturday.
The main aim of the event is to revive the sport of boxing around towns and rural areas which fall under the Mnquma area.
In previous years, Butterworth town hosted annual boxing events where young boxers from different places within the province would visit to fight against Mnquma’s amateur boxers.
These events helped Butterworth, Ngqamakhwe and Centane towns to produce talented boxers like Lwazi Mzolisa, Hlanga Kanzi and Simamkele Zakade, to mention a few.
However, in 2014, boxing in Mnquma declined because the boxing tournaments were no longer being hosted as before, which affected the development of the sport in the area. Mnquma had many boxers who participated in all levels of boxing, up to professional ranks, but there are currently no boxers from the area competing in these divisions.
For the weekend amateur event, the federation’s structure in Mnquma will revive boxing with a mission of developing talented young boxers.
During the event, there will be at least seven amateur bouts, which are expected to take place at Zovuyo Hotel.
Many of these bouts will see boxers from the Buffalo City Amateur Boxing Federation fight against Mnquma Amateur Boxing Federation competitors.
Federation chairperson in Mnquma, Mbuyiseli Xokolo, said the first bout would start at 12:00 and the entry fee would be R10.
Xokolo told Mthatha Express that former IBF featherweight champion, Welcome “Hawk” Ncita, who is also the president of the South Africa Amateur Boxing Federation, would be the important guest of the day.
