BROTHERHOOD Social Club, a 20-member club of men who can be identified by their vintage attire, has made a donation of 52 pairs of school shoes to assist destitute learners of Zanoxolo Primary School at Dumasi Village in Ngqeleni, under Nyandeni Local Municipality.
The group previously made a similar donation to Zimbane Primary School in Mthatha where they donated 39 pairs of school shoes in March last year.
The donation was made possible through individual contributions from the club members, as well as 17 pairs that were donated by three private individuals.
Club member, Yanda Maphongwana, said that the annual initiative was their little contribution to keep children in school.
“As members of the community ourselves, we noticed that young children were dropping out of school because they did not have proper uniforms to go to school and some got teased by their peers for not having uniforms.”
“This donation was our contribution towards ensuring that destitute learners are able to attend school like their peers from privileged families,” said Maphongwana.
He said that they had decided to donate to Zanoxolo Primary School after having received reports of the desperate situation of leaners at the school.
“The donation really made a difference, as most of our learners have come from disadvantaged families that rely on these children’s child support grant as their only source of income. This means that their grants cannot cover items such as school shoes and uniforms; hence we really appreciate the donation from the Brotherhood Social Club,” said school principal, Xoliswa Taleni.
The school has a total of 167 learners.
The school shoes were officially handed over to the school on March 3.
