The death toll in Monday’s bus accident on the N2 between East London and Butterworth has been revised down from 31 to 30.

This was confirmed by the Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Unathi Binqose, stating that the increase in the number was due to “a sincere mistake at the Forensic Center in East London” where they received a call of a baby girl, similar in age as the one from the bus, having died at Frere Hospital.

“The baby was presumed to be that from the accident. It has later emerged that this was a different baby who had died and the one from the bus accident is still receiving medical attention in hospital,” said Binqose.

He added that the Eastern Cape Department of Transport would like to render an unreserved apology to the country at large for the trauma this misunderstanding may have caused.

“Our prayers are with the families of the victims of the bus accident including the young girl who has died in a separate incident.”
