The South African Boxing Federation (SABOF) structure in Mnquma is preparing to host the Eastern Cape Championship Boxing Tournament on June 15 and 16.
This was confirmed by the chairperson of the structure in Mnquma, Mbuyiseli Xokolo, over the weekend when speaking to Mthatha Express.
All amateur boxers from different regions within the Eastern Cape are expected to participate in this event which will be staged at Butterworth Monument.
The aim of the event is contribute to the development of boxing and also give young boxers an opportunity to compete against each other.
Boxers who perform well during the event will qualify for the national boxing championship event expected to be held in Cape Town on July 4.
Xokolo said they have begun with preparations for this big event.
“We have already started preparations for hosting the Eastern Cape Championship and we expect amateur boxers from different regions within the province to come and be part of the event,” said Xokolo.
He said that the federation members from provincial and national are expected to attend.
Furthermore, he said with this kind of event the federation wanted to nurture young talented boxers and also encourage them in this sporting code.
Xokolo urged all boxing supporters and parents to come out in big numbers to support their kids when they compete against each other.
He also mentioned that they will target the revival of boxing in Mnquma with this kind of event, so the youth can stay away from the abuse of alcohol and drugs.
He concluded by saying that during the event dangerous weapons and alcohol will not be allowed inside the Butterworth Monument.
