The senior traditional leader of Lwandlolubomvu Traditional Council, Chief Jongilanga Sigcau, was appointed to represent the local houses in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, last week.
He said that according to Section 21 of Municipal System’s Act, traditional leaders have a right to take part in the municipalities. He said the intention was to bring development to their communities.
“The intention is to create job opportunities in the locations and to make sure that there is a good relationship between the municipalities and the communities. If there is not a good relationship, then we will see our communities protesting,” said Sigcau.
He added that another matter in the locations is that there are new homesteads that are being built which need electricity and water, so by being in the council, it is easier for them as the traditional leaders to raise their concerns. The former mayor, Councillor Sixolile Mehlomakhulu, was elected as the new speaker of this municipality. This comes after the previous speaker, Councillor Simthembile Kulu, passed away in December 2021.
According to the head of communications, Lixolile Petela, the new speaker, Mehlomakhulu, had been elected and would take over the leadership role of council, from Councillor Fikiswa Bewu, who had been acting in this position, since Kulu’s untimely passing.
“There were 36 councillors present in the meeting and Mehlomakhulu received 30 votes,” said Petela.
