Comedians from different districts will team up to host the Inkomfa Yamageza Comedy Festival at the Savoy Hotel in Mthatha on Saturday, October 23.

One of the organisers of this festival, Tumelo Trom, said he had started his comedy career in Mthatha and received huge support. Besides being a comedian, Trom, who was born and raised in Matatiele but resides in Mthatha, is currently working at Holy Cross High School, teaching creative arts and English.

“The aim of hosting this festival is to entertain people and relieve them from the stress caused by COVID-19. We cannot say whether it will be hosted annually in Mthatha because the aim is to tour the whole country, so Mthatha is a starting point,” said Trom.

He said, besides entertaining people, they aim at teaching the audience to embrace their language and culture.

“Our jokes are told in IsiXhosa and we talk about things they can relate to.”

The comedians who will take to the stage are Tsepiso Nzayo from Makhanda but residing in Cape Town, Gcinindlovu Poswa, aka Ibomvane Lethu, who resides in Cape Town, Luphelo Kodwa from King Williams Town, Vusi Oulik, who lives in Komani, and Mzantsi Teyise, aka Catsinoh, from Butterworth, as well as Sonwabile Soso Sigcau, Sihle Ciera and Zimvo Mpahleni (all from Mthatha).

Tickets are sold at R80 in advance or R100 at the door. Doors open at 17:00. Contact 073 620 0140 for more information.
