A contractor has been appointed to address road infrastructure issues on the route from Gogozayo to Elliottdale CBD, following protests that brought traffic to a standstill on the N2 highway from East London towards Mthatha on 28 January.
Residents protested for improved road infrastructure, water supply, and service delivery before law enforcement defused the situation.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed the protests were due to issues regarding road infrastructure and water supply.
He assured that the matter was being addressed by the Department of Transport.
“The most important thing is to deal with the issues that have forced them to go to the roads and protest. And on our side as transport, we have gone there,” he said, explaining the work that will be done to fix the road residents were complaining about.
“We’ll be working on that and we are in talks with other institutions of government like municipalities to address some of the issues that relate to them, issues like water provision, among other things,” he concluded.
