The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape joined the Department of Transport at the provincial launch of 2022 Easter Weekend Arrive Alive campaign at Pakade Junction in eMaxesibeni (Mount Ayliff), Alfred Nzo District, last week.

The multidisciplinary initiative was officiated by the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe, who personally engaged drivers and commuters.

She addressed a number of issues relating to road safety. Tikana-Gxotiwe mainly focused on passenger buses and taxis travelling between the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

She described the launch as a planned awareness campaign aimed at reducing the rate of motor-vehicle accidents in the entire province.

During her personal engagement and media interviews, she reiterated compliance to road safety regulations.

“We call upon all motorists, commuters and pedestrians to comply with road regulations,” said Tikana-Gxotiwe, adding that this would reduce the number of accidents on the roads.

Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Brigadier Nompumelelo Majikijela, who represented SAPS management, encouraged responsible driving on all roads, and further condemned drunken driving and public drinking.

“As the South African Police Service, we wish to emphasise responsible driving at all times. Drunken driving and public drinking are condemned at all costs and would never be understood nor tolerated by law enforcers. We love and care for every single citizen; hence we want to ensure safety and security of everyone,” said Majikijela.
