Officials from Mr Bread/Premier Foods in Mthatha gave support to children with autism from the OR Tambo Autism Centre by donating bread and other gifts with the aim of showing love and support.

Sales manager for Mr Bread/Premier Foods, Ludwe Leve, said they had supported various organisations in Mthatha.

“We decided to support these children after we heard the challenges they are facing.

“One of the main challenges was that the staff had to bake bread every day for these children. We are sure that our input would assist them a lot.

“We also brought different toys for them,” said Leve.

The director and the founder for OR Tambo Autism Centre, Nomaza Nkohla, said one of the biggest challenges they had was that they were paying rent, because they didn’t have their own place.

“Even though we get funding from the Department of Social Development, we spend it in paying rent most of the time.

“We have two teachers and four assistant teachers.

“I still have to hire another two teachers because we have close to 35 children.

“All of them (the teachers) are paid by the centre,” said Nkohla.

Nkohla confirmed that they were happy to receive such help from Mr Bread.

She said this would be a relief because when they didn’t have electricity they were forced to use a gas stove to bake for these children.
