Government Communications and Information System (GCIS), in consultation with the National School of Government, has concluded a two-day training programme for Thusong services centre champions in the Eastern Cape.
The training programme, held at the Savoy Hotel in Mthatha on November 18 and 19, was aimed at capacitating Thusong Services Centre champions on the effective and efficient management of operations of the centres.
The two-day training was also part of government’s strides to build capacity of the government officials at the coal face.
The training was attended by Thusong services centre champions made up of GCIS officials, centre managers, coordinators and customer care officials from the district and local municipalities and departments operating in these centres.
During the two-day training, participants were capacitated in, among other issues, leadership and management within the Thusong centres, customer care, principles of service delivery, communication and marketing of Thusong centres, project management and the art of public speaking.
Thusong service centres, formerly known as multi-purpose community centres, are a one-stop service centre providing government information and services to communities, based on the needs of the specific communities where they are based.
The centres also bring government information closer to the people to promote access to opportunities as a basis for improved livelihoods.
The centres have played a leading role in strengthening citizens’ access to government services which impact on their daily lives.
The Eastern Cape currently has seven Thusong service centres, namely, Kwa-Nophoyi, Sterkspruit, Centane, Cofimvaba, Qunu, Viedgesville and Tsomo.
