Education MEC sends condolences after horror crash in which six learners died

The MEC of Education in the Eastern Cape, Fundile Gade, has expressed his shock and sadness after six learners from Ndamase Senior Secondary in Ngqeleni died in an accident yesterday.


The MEC of Education in the Eastern Cape, Fundile Gade, has expressed his shock and sadness after six learners from Ndamase Senior Secondary in Ngqeleni died in an accident yesterday.

Sixteen other learners and two drivers were also injured in the collision between a truck and bakkie in Ngqeleni near Buntingville on the T30 Road outside Mthatha late yesterday, June 14.

Gade has sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, schooling community and learners.

“I wish the families could find solace in God during this trying times of their lives. Our prayers are with the bereaved families and we wish all those still hospitalised a speedy recovery,” said Gade.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mali Mtima, the department has activated the psychosocial support services to assist learners and educators, including the bereaved families from today.

“Apart from that, a team from the district is visiting all affected school and families this morning, including those still hospitalised due to injuries,” said Mtima. 

He added that the injured were taken to Nelson Mandela Academic hospital and Mthatha Regional Hospital for further medical management.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Ngqeleni Police Station for further investigation.
