The Kiviet family, from Bongweni locality in Mthatha, is appealing for help after their two children died when the shack they were living in caught fire last week.

Lisakhanya Soga (1) and her brother Ayolulwe Soga (4) were sleeping alone when their home was engulfed by flames. According to their grandmother, Monica Kiviet (46), on the night of the incident their mother, Unathi Soga (20), came to ask for something to cook. She confirmed that they were not staying together, but were neighbours.

A few minutes later, I heard her calling me. When I went out, I saw the fire. At that time the shack she was living in was engulfed in flames, to the point that I was unable to do anything to save my grandchildren. When I asked her where she was when the incident happened, she said that she had lit a candle and went to buy bread at the nearby shop. After this incident we do not have a way forward, we do not know what we must do. Firstly, no-one is working here at home. It is only my mother who is receiving a pension grant. Besides that, there is no other income. We survive by doing piece jobs.

She added that they do not have a room, which makes it difficult for them to plan the date of the funeral.

“We are asking for anyone who can assist us, because we are just in the dark and do not know where to start. We cannot confirm the date of the funeral yet, because we do not know how we will do it.”

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo confirmed this incident, stating that two children aged one and four years died when the shack they were living in caught fire. He said that it is alleged that the two kids were left by their mother (20), and when she came back, the shack was on fire.

“Police were alerted, and upon arrival, the two bodies were already burnt to death. An inquest docket has been opened at Ngangelizwe police station, and the investigation continues, as the cause of the fire is unknown at this stage,” said Matyolo.
