KEYSER BEACH – A fatal crash involving a beer-carrying truck turned into a chaotic looting scene as community members descended on the accident site and stripped the vehicle empty, complicating rescue efforts on the R72 road at Keyser Beach this weekend, 10 October.
According to Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, the incident happened at about 23:30.
He said both occupants of the sedan died at the scene while the truck lost its load of beer cases, making the rescue and recovery work extra difficult as the scene was beer-soaked with broken glass everywhere.
“To make matters worse, this attracted passersby and people from the nearby community who flooded the scene and looted the truck empty,” he reported.
“The truck driver sustained minor injuries while the 2 adult males in the sedan died at the scene,” he added.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
