ALUNGILE Gqebe, a dedicated female boxing referee from Mthatha, is determined to make her mark on the international stage.

Despite only embarking on her refereeing career in August 2023, Gqebe has long harboured aspirations of officiating at global boxing events.

“Refereeing since August 2023 has been an incredible journey,” she shared. The role has not only been fulfilling, but has also instilled in her the importance of maintaining focus in all her endeavours.

Gqebe emphasised the significant responsibilities of being a referee, including ensuring fair play and addressing any improper tactics by fighters.

“It’s crucial to monitor for any infractions, such as punches with open gloves, and to guide the boxers on the right path,” she explained.

Additionally, caring for injured boxers falls under her purview.

Her ambitions extend beyond national borders, with hopes of gaining international recognition and furthering her qualifications in the sport.

“My goal is to officiate boxing matches overseas and to enhance my credentials,” Gqebe stated.

Currently holding level 1 and 2 boxing certificates, she plans to pursue her level 3 boxing qualification by the end of May.

Gqebe’s dedication to her role has already been recognised, earning her two gold medals for her exceptional skills.
