A FILMMAKER from Qhakazana location in Willowvale climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, with the aim of raising funds to build toilets at Qhakazana Primary School in Willowvale.

Andiswa Siwela is based in Cape Town. She said she climbed this mountain between August 28 and September 2, 2021.

“My aim is to assist the school in my area which does not have proper toilets, and this put learners at risk.

“At the moment I am trying to raise funds in order to fulfil my dream. Luckily, I also have somebody who also pledged to assist with money,” said Siwela.

She said at the moment the school was using pit latrine toilets which are 1.8m deep, meaning if a child fell in, it could be hard for him/her to be saved.

Siwela confirmed that she was raising money to build six to eight toilets, but it would depend on the money she received.

The spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mali Mtima, said education was a societal matter so everybody was welcome to do whatever they could to assist in education.

He said they hoped that other individuals could come forward and help.

“We appreciate those people and businesses who are showing us support because we need these initiatives.”
