A MEMBER of the Mnquma Local Football Association, FC Tshabalala, is expected to host a 16-team soccer tournament to honour their founder, the late Mavuso “Scara” Malangeni.

The tournament will be held at the Msobomvu sports grounds and Butterworth College grounds, starting on Heritage Day. The final is expected to be played on Sunday.

The winning team will go home with a trophy plus gold medals.

There will be other prizes for the runners-up and third-placed team.

Sixteen soccer teams from various areas in Mnquma are expected to be part of the event to celebrate the contribution of the late Malangeni, who played a big role in local sport development.

Scara was a well-known sports administrator, who assisted in various sports structures, with the aim of taking the youth away from drugs.

This is why his former team, FC Tshabalala, has decided to honour him by hosting a soccer tournament to appreciate his contribution to sports development around Mnquma.

Under his leadership, FC Tshabalala managed to win a lot of trophies, including the Songe Golden Cup in 2005 and 2006, the Mnquma Mayor’s Cup and the Ngumbela title.

In 2007, the team was promoted from promotion league to SAB Regional League, only four years after it was formed in 2003.

But few years ago, the team was relegated to the promotion league.

They are currently playing in Mnquma LFA League, where they are doing well.

Malangeni’s former team has promised to organise this event on an annual basis to celebrate and keep Malangeni’s name alive in football circles.

The draw of the teams who are going to take part in the event was expected to be done yesterday (Wednesday) before the games start tomorrow (Friday).
