Heavy downpours in the Eastern Cape municipality of Port St
John’s have prompted the municipality to issue an alert for residents to remain
vigilant for the next coming days.

This has seen scores of people being displaced following a
trail of destruction left by the recent downpours in Port St John’s earlier
this week. In addition to the heavy rains, it is forecasted that certain parts
of the province will experience very cold temperatures.

According to the Mayor of the Municipality, Nomvuzo
Mlombile-Cingo, it has been reported that a six-year-old boy drowned while
crossing a flooded river on his way from school in Ngxongweni village.

Mlombile-Cingo further urged residents in low-lying areas to
move to safer places.

“We urge therefore anyone travelling especially since its
Easter weekend to avoid rivers. Make sure you stay at home if the river is
full. Neighbours must do what we are known for as Africans. Those who still
have safe houses must help others. As Port St Johns Municipality we have that Youth
Centre Hall where anyone experiencing any challenge can go,” Mlombile-Cingo
said.
