A collaboration between the Mbizana Serious Commercial Crime Investigation teams of the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) ensured that a former Station Commander Nomandla Mali (52) from Qhasa Police Station had been apprehended on suspicious of theft on February 9, 2024.

She briefly appeared before the Regional Court in Flagstaff and was released on warning. Her case was remanded until April 30, 2024, for legal proceedings.

According to Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba in an accident back to 2020 during lockdown, it is reported that Mali who was then in charge at Qhasa Police Station allegedly visited the premises of a complainant at Emakhuzeni liquor store at Mphetshwa location in Mbizana, where she identified herself as the Station Commander and apparently questioned the complainant about the liquor found on the premises.

Fumba said,

Despite the explanation provided by the complainant that the liquor was not for sale but for customers of a Bed and Breakfast business, it is further stated that she allegedly orchestrated the seizure of the alcohol and instructed a second police vehicle from her station to come and allegedly load all the liquor. Subsequently, during the journey back to Qhasa Police Station, it is reported that her vehicle that was containing a significant quantity of liquor mysteriously vanished and allegedly arrived late empty.

He added that the matter was then referred to the Hawks for further investigation, upon following an investigation a warrant of arrest was issued leading to her arrest at Mbizana Police Station.
