A man (25) residing at Quigney in East London will appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder of his girlfriend (23).
It is alleged that the deceased was a Law Student at Fort Hare University in East London.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said members of SAPS Crime Prevention were patrolling Fitzpatrick Road in East London on Thursday, 19 August when they stopped by a motorist, informing them about a body that was seen in a suitcase at Quigney.
“On their arrival at the corner of Fleet Street and Fitzpatrick Road a suitcase with the body of a female (23) was found. Next to it was a black bag with other (body) parts,” said Kinana.
He added that whilst at the scene police received information that a man, believed to be linked to the murder, was found. He was arrested immediately.
“On further investigation, which led the police to the house where the two lived, a plastic bag with other parts of the body was also discovered.”
Kinana added the investigation revealed that the suspect and deceased were in a relationship and have stayed together for some time. He said reports suggest that she was a Law Student at Fort Hare University in East London.
The deceased’s name is being withheld until her family have been notified about her death.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, condemned the acts of brutality on the young woman.
“This is one of the devastating scenes women do not want to see during women’s month,” said Ntshinga.
She said the incident represents a manifestation of the stubbornness of Gender Based Violence and Femicide incidents which are a pandemic within their society.
The DA Women’s Network (DAWN) in the Eastern Cape strongly
condemned the murder.
“There is a total onslaught
on the lives of women in the Eastern Cape. Our
women are being raped and murdered. They are not safe in their communities.
“We will follow this case
from start to finish to ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrator
ends up behind bars,” said Nomvano Zibonda, DAWN Eastern Cape Chairperson.
