Department of Transport spokesperson Makaya Komisa has confirmed that the truck involved in the head-on collision with a Nissan Almera near Myendeki funeral parlour located between Dutywa and Mthatha on Wednesday, November 2, was unroadworthy.
The tuck’s license disk is said to have been last renewed in 2020.
“According to the information, the truck was transporting sand when the accident happened. There were five people involved, two females and three males. Four suffered serious to critical injuries, with one sustaining minor to moderate injuries,” said Komisa.
He added that the passengers were taken to Butterworth Hospital.
“We strongly condemn motorists who drive unroadworthy vehicles, especially now that we are approaching the festive season. We call upon our officers to arrest motorists who fail to adhere to the rules of the road.”
