Four suspects briefly appeared before the Tsolo Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with stoning and killing a police officer on July 8. 

Siphumeze Mancipha (27), Lungisani Fantein (35), Sibongakonke Gagane (29) and Khanyisa Mdedelwa (29) were remanded in custody.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed this incident, stating that the Mthatha-based Serious Organized Crime Investigation team of the Hawks arrested four suspects for allegedly killing Warrant Officer Inani Mbombo (51), who was attached to the Mthatha Static Police Unit in Mandela Homestead, Qunu.

“It is alleged that the incident occurred at Philakuzenzela Tavern, Ntshiqo location in Tsolo. It is reported that the deceased had a heated argument with one of the tavern patrons, who was not part of the suspected persons. The argument is said to have culminated in the policeman shooting and injuring the patron he argued with,” said Mgolodela.

She said it was further revealed that community members chased the policeman as he fled from the tavern. Mgolodela said it is additionally reported that all four suspects stoned and killed the deceased.

According to her, the allegations revealed that the service firearm was found and seized with empty cartridges and a big stone on the scene.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Obed Ngwenya, lauded the Mthatha-based Serious Organized Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for apprehending all four suspects expeditiously to face the full might of the law.

Their matter will be remanded for a formal bail application on Tuesday, July 18.
