The Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Pam Tshwete, announced that the National Department of Human Settlements had approved over R16 million towards rebuilding of the destroyed housing structures at the Alfred Nzo District Municipality.
The funds would be used to rebuild houses which were destroyed during the recent flood disasters.
She said that last Tuesday they were going to transfer R8,5 million of the total amount to the District Municipality. These funds would only be used for human settlements development.
“Eastern Cape is one of the provinces that were recently affected by disasters including KwaZulu-Natal and North West. This allocation would be used for affected households in Ntabankulu, Umzimvubu, Matatiele and Winnine Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipalities. Tshwete made this announcement during the handing over of houses at Ludeke village in Mbizana last week.
While handing over the houses to the beneficiaries, which included Hlutshiwe Masoso (81) and Mlunguza Nokwanda (71), Tshwete emphasised that the delivery of houses to the vulnerable group such as elderly, child-headed households, military veterans and people with disabilities, remained one of the government priorities.
The MEC for Human Settlements, Nonceba Kontsiwe, said the provincial department’s budget allocation of R1,4 billion was expected to deliver over 7 000 housing units and would also prioritise vulnerable group.
“Our priority is to ensure that indigent households and vulnerable group have shelter over their heads. We appeal to those who are on the waiting list to bear with us,” said Kontsiwe.
