A well-known gospel artist from Phendu location in Mqanduli has been nominated as the best radio presenter in the Independent National Gospel Music Awards (INGOMA), which will be held in Johannesburg on August 28.

The closing date for voting is August 9.

Besides being a gospel singer, Abongile Nyondo is also a radio presenter from Unitra Community Radio Station (UCR FM).

He said when he received a message that he had been nominated for a national award, he was very excited and, at the same time, emotional, thinking about where he came from.

“I am from a rural area. I am grateful and I thank God for opening new doors for my life and my media career.

“I thank my supporters for believing in me and for voting for me. In you I have a family. Continue buying my CD and listening to my radio show and attend my events,” said Nyondo.

He said this nomination meant a lot to him because he believed this would push his career to higher places and he hoped it would increase the listenership for his shows on UCR.

“Knowing that a lot of work has been done, I am just playing my part in taking the station to where it is supposed to be,” he said.

Talking about his music, he said he had managed to release four albums and a single. His first album, titled UbeUsahleli, was released in 2004, followed by Ziyaxolelwa, featuring Veliswa Skeyi, which was released in 2008.

The third album, titled Inkosi Inamandla, was released in 2014. Then the fourth album, titled Uhamba Nam, was released in 2018.

“My single, titled Ewe Nzulu, was released in 2020 during lockdown and I could not manage to market that song due to COVID-19. The latest CD is a single, titled Izwi Layihlab’ Intliziyo. It’s just one song. I thought I would do a full album but COVID is here, so it’s pointless to do it because I would not be able to sell it anywhere, due to COVID-19 regulations.”
