THE iconic Guild Theatre in East London recently celebrated its 62nd birthday.
History has it that the much-loved theatre was built at an estimated cost of £79 000 (R158 000) in the early 1960s, after more than eight years of public fundraising.
It officially opened its doors on Saturday, 6 October 1962 staging its inaugural production – the British comedy, School for Scandal – directed by Mary Howe, who reportedly imported costumes from London especially for the occasion.
Ever since then it has been the home of entertainment, hosting countless local, national and even international acts of music, drama, fashion shows, magic shows, conferences and so much more.
Situated at the corner of Union Avenue and Dawson Road in Selborne, the playhouse facility accommodates about 490 people. It has played a very big role in growing the arts in the province by showcasing emerging and established local artists.
