The Mthatha High Court has granted asset forfeiture orders to the East London Asset Forfeiture Investigation Unit which collectively amount to more than R162 000 against a woman (82) who allegedly defrauded a Road Accident Fund claimant.
The complainant was injured when the mini taxi that she was travelling overturned on 22 January 2020.
According to Warrant officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, many vehicle occupants were injured and transported to the Mthatha Hospital for treatment. The complainant was treated for a shoulder fracture.
It is alleged that the complainant was visited by a woman (82), who was known to her, and who offered to assist the victim in lodging a claim with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) through attorneys based in Mthatha.
Mhlakuvana said it was further reported that a meeting occurred with the attorneys, and that a claim against the RAF was lodged for the complainant.
“The matter was referred to Priority Crime Serious Investigation (PSCI) of the Hawks, which, with the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), led to the granting of the forfeiture order on 26 September 2023.”
The team was successfully granted permission to freeze the remaining funds that were deposited to both the bank accounts that the accused person used,” Mhlakuvana said.
The criminal case is still under investigation.
