The members of the Ikamva Initiative non-governmental organisation donated shoes to two primary schools in Qumbu, last week.

They donated the shoes to Detyana Primary School and Upper Chulunca Primary School.

The deputy chairperson of the Ikamva Initiative, Tumeka Nokepeyi, who was one of the founders, said this initiative was launched in January this year, by seven education assistants and two teachers from Mhlontlo Local Municipality.

Nokepeyi said they had taken money from their own pockets to buy shoes for learners.

“We are using our money before we start asking from other people and friends. Our aim is to see all learners wearing the same thing in their schools. We are trying to make them equal, knowing that this would bring back their dignity,” said Nokepeyi.

One of the teachers from the school, Nosipho Poyo, said they were very happy to see young people helping others.

“They put smiles on the faces of our learners and this had brought back their confidence. It is hard for most of the parents to buy even one pair of shoes, so this donation brought a great change (to their lives),” said Poyo.

She added since now the winter is about to start, at least their learners would have something to wear.

Poyo said they did not expect this but they thanked members of the organisation for bringing about change in their school.
