King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Nyaniso Nelani, has launched a municipal road safety campaign, which he said would focus on crime reduction and highway patrols on the busy N2 and R61 roads, to ensure that motorists adhere to road rules during the Easter period.

The municipal Easter road safety campaign officially started on April 4, despite Nelani launching it on April 7, and will remain in force for the entire month of April.

The municipality has further cautioned motorists and residents of a zero-tolerance approach to any criminal activity, while further advising road users to be vigilant and adhere to the rules and regulations.

“Through this campaign we want to integrate the work of enforcing the law during the Easter period with other spheres within the security cluster.

“Our main target is to reduce crime in our towns, knowing very well that we have high incidents of crime within the municipality,” Nelani said.

“This campaign will mainly focus on, but not be limited to, traffic controls, roadblocks, raid operations and patrols around ATMS and shopping malls within the CBD.

“There will be clear visibility of traffic personnel and members of the South African Police Services at intersections. Emergency management services will also be deployed at appropriate locations,” Nelani added.

The municipality said a joint operation centre (JOC) was in place for monitoring purposes and to ensure that the outcome of the programme yields its expectations.

Nelani took part in a roadblock held at Decoligny Junction on the R61, as part of the official launch of the campaign on April 7.

The roadblock yielded positive results, as 20 traffic fines were issued, six vehicles were impounded for being not roadworthy, a long-distance bus was impounded for failing the roadworthy test and a nearby tavern was closed for operating without a licence.
