Dominant soccer side, Thunderbirds Ladies FC, from Butterworth, returned to training session this week after Hollywoodbets Super League games were suspended, due to the increased numbers of COVID-19 cases.
Earlier this month, the South African Football Association (SAFA) suspended the Super League games until August 7.
Prior to the suspension of fixtures, the Butterworth-based team was doing very well, having managed to win three consecutive games and improved their log standings from 11th to seventh place with 14 points after 11 games.
After these victories, coach Thembalethu Apleni’s chargers were expected to visit mid-table side, Ma-Indies, but SAFA suspended the fixtures and their game has since been rescheduled to August 15.
Apleni, chatting with Mthatha Express about their recent performances, said they were not surprised at all about their achievements as they had been working hard in their most recent games.
He said in their previous five games they had managed to do well because they did not drop many points, instead they collected 11 out of 15 points.
“We are not surprised about our current performance because we did very well in the previous five games,” said Apleni.
He said these kinds of results show that his team have turned over a new leaf, as they had been looking impressive on the field, which resulted in their supporters starting to have confidence in them going forward.
Asked about whether or not he believed the current suspension would affect their performance, Apleni responded by saying that maybe their momentum would be broken, but they were aiming to pick up where they left off, when the league games resume.
