Learners from Holy Cross Senior Secondary School in Mthatha have won a trolley library from the reading competition hosted by Tru FM, recently.

According to one of the teachers from this school, Yamkela Ntwalana, learners were asked to write essays in English and Xhosa.

“The top five learners who won in this competition came from our school. We are happy because our school does not have a library, so this will make a change for our learners. Our school has book clubs, reading clubs and hosts debates. Our learners like reading very much but we are struggling because we do not have a library,” said Ntwalana.

He added that this will motivate them more because now they will have some books to read. One of the learners from Holy Cross Senior Secondary School, Imi Nkosiyane (Grade 11), said that he is a book worm and enjoys debating.

“My teachers asked if I was interested in participating in the competition, and I agreed to participate in it as I seize every opportunity I get. Initially I thought that it’s just one of those competitions that I enter and never really get a response from the organisers,” said Nkosiyane.

He added that he was intrigued and excited when he got a response saying he was in the top five. Nkosiyane added that he had written his essay in English.

“After I read it on air, I got the news that I was one of the winners and that really shocked me. I was very humbled and grateful to God that I had won. I had other plans for my future. Writing would just be one of my hobbies; however, I have been working on something for the past four months. It is on pause now as I am busy with my exams. Overall, I am happy and humbled by the fact that my work is appreciated.”
