Do you have a will? Is your will up to date? Who will inherit from you when you can no longer express your wishes?

Do you have a will? Is your will up to date? Who will inherit from you when you can no longer express your wishes?

A will is a critical legal document that can help you ensure that your belongings are distributed according to your wishes after you pass away.

It is important to have a will drafted by a legal practitioner because they have the necessary expertise to ensure that all the legal requirements are met.

Each year, a number of attorneys participate in National Wills Week. This year, National Wills Week is from 12-16 September 2022 and participating law firms and legal practitioners will be drafting wills at no cost.

During this week, you can visit Legal Aid South Africa offices to have a professional and legal will drafted, at no cost.

When you visit your nearest Legal Aid SA office, please bring:

  • Your ID document
  • A list of what you own – this could be property, clothing items, family heirlooms, funds, et cetera; and
  • The details of the person(s) you wish to leave these assets to.

National Wills Week seeks to raise awareness amongst the public of the importance of drafting a will. If you do not yet have a will, or want to update your will, be sure to visit Legal Aid SA for assistance.

More information on participating law firms and legal practitioners is available on the Law Society of South Africa’s website: https://www.lssa.org.za/our-initiatives/advocacy/national-wills-week
