Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Sobane Mnukwa, was pleased with the public resistance against violence and looting in Kwa Bhaca and Emaxesibeni.
This followed unprecedented criminal activities and violence which become apparent in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
“The destruction of property and rampant looting of economic zones would have severe implications for our already ailing economy.
“This would further result in job losses and exacerbate hunger. I must, however, express my sincere gratitude towards the people of Kwa Bhaca and Emaxesibeni for their resilient stance in protecting their respective towns,” said Mnukwa.
He said, as part of their ongoing engagement with key sectors of society, he would be meeting with leaders of various civil organisations and forums to discuss the current situation.
“These meetings would aid in restoring peace and harmony through Umzimvubu.
“This violence and destruction took place in the midst of a devastating pandemic and, as local government we could only do so much in trying to save lives. We plead with all residents to remain vigilant and work hand in hand with our law enforcement officers.”
Executive Mayor for Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Sixolile Mehlomakhulu, applauded the residents of the district for their role in preventing the riots and looting seen in other parts of the country. He urged residents to continue with their compliance with the level four lockdown regulations and abiding with the law.
“Our people in the district have so far been calm and refused to be influenced by acts of violence happening elsewhere in the country. We appreciate the high level of discipline shown by our people and urge them to identify and report any possible gathering so that they may together work to save our district and already suffering economy,” said Mehlomakhulu.
