Police have arrested a 23-year-old man found in possession of a firearm, at Sulenkama locality in Qumbu.


Police have arrested a 23-year-old man found in possession
of a firearm, at Sulenkama locality in Qumbu.

Police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said that
the arrest comes after police followed up on information they received which
led them to the home of the suspect in New Houses in Qumbu. Upon searching
they recovered a 9 mm pistol, magazine with nine live rounds and a leather
pouch.

“He failed to produce the licence and on investigation it
was discovered that the firearm belonged to his father who had already opened a
case at the Sulenkama SAPS. The suspect was arrested immediately and charged
for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Mawisa.

OR tambo District Commissioner, Major General Phumzile
Cetyana urged community members to keep on informing SAPS about any criminal
activities that occur in their localities by reporting anonymously to SAPS
Crime Stop number 0860 010 111.

“We will ensure that firearms are off the streets and our
citizens are safe and secured and those who break the law are brought to
justice,” said Cetyana.
