Sonwabile Maxwell Mjilo (40) was sentenced by the Mthatha Specialized Commercial Crimes Court on numerous charges of fraud on July 12.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, Mjilo was found guilty on count one to seven to undergo four years direct imprisonment, all counts treated as one. Count eight to nine Contravention of Section 86 (1), 85 and 89.
“Section 45 and 51 Act 70 of 2002 both Counts treated as one for sentence to undergo eight years imprisonment. Sentence to run consecutively,” Mgolondela said.
She said a case of fraud was reported in Mount Frere after a cloned Standard bank card was used to purchase large volumes of litres of diesel from Mpiti and Total fuel filling stations in Mount Frere on September 20, 2013.
“The matter was reported to the Mthatha Based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for probing which culminated in his arrest at Ixopo in KwaZulu Natal in 2016. The investigations revealed that the two filling stations were prejudiced cash to the value of R140 000.”
Mgolodela added that after a number of court appearances, Mjilo who denied the allegations was found guilty after evidence was brought against him. The Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya commended the team for the job well done.
