Matric learner brutally raped, murdered in Ngqeleni

A Grade 12 learner from Zanokhanyo Senior Secondary School in Ngqeleni, Vika Diya (19), died due to a gruesome attack on November 11, 2023, while she was on her way back to accompanying her fellow learner back home after their study session.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education spokesperson, Mali Mtima confirmed this, stating that according to the report from the district, the deceased was attacked on her way back home; she was raped and stabbed several times on her body by the suspect (24) who was allegedly apprehended by the community and killed hours later.

Mtima said, 

She was rushed to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at the hospital. The department has provided counseling services to the learners of the school as they were the first ones to arrive at the scene and saw the deceased unpalatable condition after the attack.

He added that during this time, the department sends its heartfelt condolences to the Diya family, the school and the entire community of Tshisabantu.

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo confirmed the incident, stating that the victim was raped and killed by a man (24) using a knife at Tshisabantu Administrative Area in Ngqeleni.

Matyolo said she was rushed to St Barnabas Hospital, where she died after having mentioned the name of the suspect.

“The mob attacked the suspect and also died.

No one has been arrested from the mob, as it has been confirmed that detectives have roped in crime intelligence to gather more information about the mob. The first case opened is of rape and murder, and the second one is of murder by the mob. One of the actions to be taken while the investigation continues is an awareness campaign about the wrongfulness of mob justice,”
