Execitive Mayor for the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Councillor Vukile Mhlelembana, accompanied by the Mayor of Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality, Councillor Daniswa Mafumbatha, have been visiting households that were affected by the recent floods to some areas of the district, to assess the damages.

The assessment started in Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality and was accompanied by relief support assistance in the form of food parcels, sponges and blankets.

Preliminary results that had been consolidated up to date showed that the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality had 44 partially damaged homes, Umzimvubu Local Municipality had 37, Ntabankulu Local Municipality had 54 and Matatiele Local Municipality had 50, making the total of 185 partially damaged homes across the district and 409 people homeless.

“Bridges and access roads have been affected by this, and what is more painful is that some of the people who lost their lives in KwaZulu-Natal belonged to our municipality,” said Mhlelembana.

He urged community members to check on their loved ones, stating that if they don’t find them on their cellphones, they should report this to the SAPS immediately.

He said some of their community members depended on ploughing but now they would suffer because their crops had been also affected.

He said that they were asking donations so that they could buy food for those people who were affected by this.

“We hope that government will also intervene. We also urge people to move away when it is raining to avoid some problems that might happen.”
