MEC for Education, Fundile Gade, urged parents from Chafutweni location in Willowvale to discipline their children.
Gade said this during an imbizo and special prayer, after the gruesome murder of three people in that area, recently.
“I also urge you to report the crime that is happening in the village to the police and learn to speak out,” said Gade.
Gade represented the Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, at this imbizo.
He was accompanied by the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, and other stakeholders.
The focus was on the National Development Plan (NDP), with specific emphasis on the work that needed to be done by the government and community members to achieve a safer and more secure Eastern Cape for all.
The residents of this area expressed their concerns with the general state of crime and service delivery in the area.
They raised issues of concern and also requested an increase in patrols and police visibility.
Other concerns involved road construction, and a lack of water and sanitation around the village.
Mene assured the community that police visibility would be increased and that the SAPS satellite station at Nqadu Great Place needed to be better utilised.
“Police are busy with investigation as there were suspects arrested in these (murder) cases.
“There is an SAPS provincial hotline, 040 608 7562/7524, which was introduced for the community members to report criminal activities anonymously.
“This will assist in the fight against crime,” Mene added.
