MIGHTY Eagles FC beat Mnya Academy FC 3-0 this past Saturday, to be crowned the champions of the SAB League Inland Stream.

The goals were scored by Lindokuhle Faku, Asive Langwe and Aphelele Sigwayi.

The Eagles, with an entertaining style of football, are now the favourites to represent the OR Tambo District in the provincial SAB League play-offs, expected to be held this coming weekend in Gqeberha.

However, the Eagles need to go through a dangerous Storm Breakers FC “decider match”, before going to provincial play-offs. The result of that deciding match, due to be played yesterday, Wednesday, June 23, in Lusikisiki, was not available at the time of going to press.

Reflecting on the entire season, the Eagles’ head coach, Sipho Ginola, better known as Cottage, told Mthatha Express that the season had been a fruitful one, as they came into the last match against Mnya Academy having already been crowned champions of the SAB Inland Stream League.

Before the start of the season, Mighty Eagles FC played 17 matches (friendly and tournament) to prepare for the league and they won 15 of them, had one draw and lost one.

The wins boosted the players’ mentalities, as they started and ended the league on fire and out of 14 league games, they won 11, had two draws and lost only one game.

“The league results show that the team has got quality and the best players,” Cottage said.

“We are now eyeing the ABC Motsepe League. It’s time for Mighty Eagles to get promoted and bring the culture of football back to Mthatha. We need a team here in Mthatha,” the coach said.
