SALES manager for Mister Bread, Reginald Kubayi, confirmed that they had hosted the Package of Goodness (POG) campaign to encourage learners from primary schools to keep the environment in their areas clean.

He said that they had approached six primary schools and asked them to collect plastic bags for Mister Bread. He said that in return they would check the needs of the school, and then support them based on their needs.

“We checked and found that some of the learners do not have proper school shoes, so we decided to buy shoes worth R50 000. We host this campaign twice a year. Then, in the second quarter (September) we will host another one. We want them to know that they must pick the papers and plastics when they see them in order to keep our environment clean,” said Kubayi.

The schools which benefited from this was Upper Ngqungqu Primary School, which received 100 pairs of school shoes, followed by Bijolo Primary School, which received 80 pairs, and Upper Ngqwara Primary School which received 20 pairs.

Other schools that also participated in this campaign were Mqanduli Village, Pangindlela Primary School and Zibodla Primary School in Mqanduli.

The principal of Bijolo Primary School, Thembile Mzikandaba, said that this initiative would change the situation for many learners who come from poor backgrounds.

“Now our children will be able to wear shoes. Our area is one of the poorest areas, and most of the residents here depend on social and pension grants. They will now come to school wearing shoes each and every day, especially now its winter season it was painful to see some of them coming to school wearing shoes that are not in good condition,” said Mzikandaba.

He said that they would sit down with the members of the School Governing Body (SGB) so that they can choose the beneficiaries.
