Mnquma Mayor’s Cup a huge success

Mnquma Local Municipality in Butterworth has remained committed to playing a big role in sports development so that talented young players can make their dreams come true one day.


Mnquma Local Municipality in Butterworth has remained committed to playing a big role in sports development so that talented young players can make their dreams come true one day.

Every year, the municipality hosts the Mnquma Mayor’s Cup, which consists of various sporting codes, including soccer, rugby, netball, athletics and boxing.

This year, the municipality hosted the annual event in an attempt to motive the youth through sport and also with the aim of contributing towards sport development in townships and rural areas.

In April, the tournament started with qualifying games, where teams from wards were playing each other to book their places in the quarter-finals.

The municipality also recently held semi-finals and finals in soccer and netball, under the strict lockdown measures of COVID-19, at the Msobomvu sports ground, near Butterworth.

In the first semi-final, Dudumashe FC, from Ngqamakhwe, defeated Toleni Youth Academy from Ndabakazi village 2-0, while Kentane United FC beat Gangqa FC 2–0 to proceed to the final.

In the final, Kentane United FC defeated Dudumashe FC 2-0 in a highly entertaining clash, as both teams displayed good football.

By winning the final, Kentane United FC went home with a big floating trophy, a soccer ball and 20 gold medals, plus a brand new soccer kit, while the runners-up received 20 silver medals, a brand new soccer kit and a soccer ball.

In netball, Blue Sky netball team, from Butterworth, were crowned the champions, after they defeated Dudumashe netball team from Ngqamakhwe 6-3 in the final.

They went home with a netball kit plus a floating trophy.

During the prize-giving presentation, Mnquma Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Sithembiso Ncetezo, thanked all the teams who had participated in the tournament and congratulated the winners.
