In an desperate appeal to the Eastern Cape Department of Health, 34-year-old Pumla Thabalaza, from Lambasi locality in Lusikisiki, is seeking urgent medical assistance for an unknown disease that has left her in dire straits. Thabalaza’s health ordeal began in 2019 after a routine dental procedure went awry, leading to severe complications.

According to the mother of five, she was fine after a simple tooth extraction, but after some weeks her mouth became extremely swollen.

Thabalaza recounted her distressing journey to Mthatha Express, revealing what was supposed to be a simple tooth extraction has turned into a nightmare.

Weeks after the procedure, she noticed her mouth swelling, a condition growing progressively worse over time. Despite seeking help from local healthcare facilities, and allegedly being promised further treatment in Cape Town, Thabalaza is still waiting for a resolution.

“After I saw that my situation was becoming worse every day, I went to the local clinic which referred me to a local hospital. From there I was referred to another hospital where I was promised to be sent to Cape Town, last year. I am still waiting for the call but until today it is quiet. I even went to check towards last year, but I was told to still wait for a call,” Thabalaza claims.

The impact of her condition has been profound, affecting her ability to perform basic tasks and causing significant distress.

“Now I am forced to use my hand to eat instead of using a spoon, and it is hard to breathe,” she explained.

The situation has also taken a toll on her family, with Thabalaza expressing her determination to survive for her young children.

Her husband, Nkosiyaphi, echoed her sentiments, emphasising the emotional strain the family is enduring.

“The situation of my wife is breaking my heart,” he stated, affirming his unwavering support despite the challenges.

When approached for comment, spokesperson for the MEC for the Department of Health, Mkhululi Ndamase, said he was still waiting for a report from the clinicians involved in Thabalaza’s care.
