A 34-year-old woman from Xolobe Administrative area in Tsomo
has been arrested after she allegedly buried her newborn baby alive on October
11, 2021.
According to police reports, the baby was allegedly put in a
suitcase and buried in a shallow grave in the yard.
“Police were alerted by the Chief of the area about his
suspicion that the woman was pregnant and that there is no child. The police
went out to Xolobe and found a grave in the yard. Upon digging it up, they discovered
the child in blankets in the suitcase, still alive. The child was taken to
hospital,” police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.
She added that the mother was arrested and taken to hospital
for medical attention.
“She is currently under police guard. A case of attempted
murder is being investigated,” Naidu said.
