The founder of Mzansi Traditional and Cultural Musical Awards (MTCMA), Nomdakazana Dlamini, from Nyandeni location in Libode, will be hosting the first annual MTCMA awards in Gauteng, on December 11.
Dlamini is a well-known traditional artist. She said the glittering gala dinner would honour and recognise the efforts and talent of traditional musicians by ensuring inclusion. She confirmed that this was the first edition of the event.
It was supposed to have taken place last year but, due to the pandemic, it did not happen.
“By hosting these awards, we want to acknowledge the artists that are at grassroots level. These are the talented artists who are our unsung heroes and have immensely contributed to the industry that is male-dominated and only recognises the bigger names,” said Dlamini.
She added that the event would honour traditional artists with 18 categories that include an award for the legendary queen of maskandi gospel, a legendary bass guitarist, a legendary producer, an international maskandi, and a traditional and cultural ambassador.
“Some of the performances will come from the multi-award-winning Tau Sabata and Miriam Lekena. Those who will be getting their lifetime achievement awards include Bonakele Myeza, Vukile Xoli and Mbuzeni Mkhize.”
