HIP-HOP performer, Bonga Tafane (22), otherwise known by his stage name, Bhutlegend, has released his new single titled Grootman, a precursor to the release of his full album that is due to drop sometime next month.
He says his new album, titled IsiXhosa Has Never Been Cooler, contains songs in IsiXhosa only, as he wanted to fully embrace his mother tongue through the project.
“I am someone who strictly makes music in IsiXhosa and on the upcoming album, I have also featured some of the artists that inspired me while growing up by making their music in IsiXhosa such as Yanga Chief and Flash Kumkani,” said Tafane, who hails from Viedgesville in Mthatha.
“By making my music in IsiXhosa, I want to show other artists and those who aspire to be musicians that your music can be ‘cool’ while singing in your mother tongue and dispel the belief that you have to sing in English for your music to be good,” Tafane added.
Grootman features Cape Town-based Tar Bravo. Tafane describes it as a fusion of hip-hop and kwaito, which is dedicated to men and meant to appreciate good men in society.
Tafane said he started performing music as a hobby in 2011 but only made his first recording in 2016.
His single is currently available on most digital music download and streaming platforms and his upcoming album will also be available on these platforms, once it is released on a yet to be confirmed date in October.
