Municipal truck driver dies after heated altercation with a colleague

A truck driver of the Mhlontlo Municipality died on Monday, July 17 after a heated argument with a colleague turned fatal.

Councillors from Mhlontlo Local Municipality confirmed the death of one of their employees, Zoyisile Nolusu.

According to the Mhlontlo Local Municipality spokesperson, Solakhe Magxala, “the incident involved a heated altercation between Nolusu and a colleague, which regrettably escalated to the point of irreparable consequence. The employee has been suspended with immediate effect”. He said they are conducting a thorough internal review to understand the event’s circumstances fully.

“As part of our review process, we will be working closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure that a comprehensive investigation is conducted. We will also provide full cooperation and support to the authorities involved.

“As a municipality, we are deeply shaken and profoundly saddened by the loss of a member of our team in such a distressing manner,” said Magxala. He added that their thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Magxala said the municipality prioritises the safety and well-being of their employees above all else, and they strive to maintain a workplace environment that fosters collaboration, mutual respect and open communication.

According to Magxala, it is disheartening that an incident of this nature has occurred within their institution. He said in the wake of this tragedy, they are extending counselling and support services to all their employees who may be affected by this loss.

Magxala added that the emotional well-being of their team members is of utmost importance to them, and they are dedicated to assisting them during this difficult time.

“Once again, we express our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Nolusu’s funeral service will be held at his home on Saturday, July 29, at Kroza locality in Qumbu.
