Spokesperson for the Umzimvubu Local Municipality, Khanya Kalashe, confirmed that this municipality, together with the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, had handed over sponges, blankets, and other valuables to Makaula Senior Secondary School in Mount Frere, recently.

He said these items were handed over with the aim of helping the girl learners who lost everything, when their hostel caught fire during Summer School around March this year.

“The learners who received these items were 64; the chairperson of the School Governing Body (SGB), Simphiwe Makaula, said they were happy about what the municipality did for them, and he encouraged this municipality to keep assisting people who are facing such problems,” said Kalashe.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, 70 learners from five schools clustered at Makaula Senior Secondary School were left with nothing after their hostel caught fire, recently.

He said the fire had destroyed an entire wing that was built in 2014, consisting of three dormitories housing 70 girls from the camp.

Nothing in this building could be salvaged during this ordeal, as beds, mattresses, and personal belongings of the girls burnt to ash. Local firefighters were called to the scene and a case was opened with the local South African Police Service (SAPS) for investigation, to determine the cause of the fire.

He added that the camp had about 714 Matrics from Huku Senior Secondary School, Buffalo-Nek Senior Secondary School, Khulangophondo Senior Secondary School, Makaula Senior Secondary School, and Loyiso Senior Secondary School.

According to him, no-one was harmed as the fire happened while the victims were attending classes.”
